"The Pillowman" is probably one of the weirdest, saddest, most disturbing things I've ever read while also being one of the most beautiful and brilliant (and no, I don't think everything McDonagh writes is brilliant, some of of his plays were only 'very good') stories I've known. It's cruel and horrible but oddly comforting at the same time.
More modern day Bride of Frankenstein.
