Yhdeksäs torstai

It's been a very good year. Possibly the best I've had this far. Hope it didn't suck for you either.

I was going to make a "best of 2009" list, but it would have been rather boring for me to write and for you to read, so I'm not posting it here.

Also - I bought an accordion. And I know where you live and found out which busses will take me there tomorrow morning. Happy New Year.

Only kidding. I don't have an accordion. Although I do have bagpipes. Really.

Kahdeksas tiistai

I have a new sketchbook. It's beautiful and pretty damn close to perfect. Hardcovered, charcoal paper for pages and kraft paper on covers, 13.2 x 18.2 cm, some 90 pages. There's nothing better than starting a new sketchbook.

He is a gravedigger and he doesn't mind his job.
Have you ever wondered how RICH gravediggers in westerns must be? There's always only one gravedigger/coffin maker per movie and about 20-200 bodies per town per movie.

I wouldn't mind a job like that.

Kahdeksas perjantai

Colours come from the song "672" by The Dresden Dolls. I had a good feeling about this picture but then... it went... kind of away. Oh well. At least I'm happy with the skin tones.

Seitsemäs tiistai

I could spend hours watching acrobats doing stuff while standing on their hands.

There's something about that balance that's just amazing.

Kuudes maanantai

It's from my favourite fairytale, Raul Roine's "Kauneinta maailmassa" ("The most beautiful thing in the world" or something). Check it out if you can. It's the most beautiful story I've ever heard. I've wanted to draw this since I was about seven years old.

"Kauneinta on maailmassa se, mitä tavoittelee, mutta ei saa. Kauneinta maailmassa on kaipaus."

Oh, and by the way, it's Tom Waits' 60th birthday.
Downtown Train
I Don't Wanna Grow Up
Falling Down
That short instrumental clip at the end of "Downtown Train" is pretty awesome.

Kuudes lauantai

It's Saturday now.

Finished. Now that I bothered to colour it I kinda wish I had spent more time on the lineart.

Kuudes perjantai. Yhä.

Victory rolls are made of win. I know they're kinda misplaced, but, yeah.

Oh, thank god, I'm back to normal. I may read 'Hogfather' this month, but other than that I don't really care about December. Fairytale of New York never was my favourite Pogues song either. (Rainy Night in Soho, Sit Down by the Fire, Pinned down and Dark Streets of London are. And pretty much everything before 'Peace and Love'.)

Perjantai. En tiedä mones, ihan tyhmä otsikointisysteemi mulla muutenkin.

I don't think I have anything to say that could save this situation. It's RGB snowflake against CMYK snowfalke. I blame school. And Yoko Ono.

Also, I just realised that Christmas is coming yet I don't feel angry at all. Not even a bit annoyed. I almost feel HAPPY about it. Like I don't remember ever feeling like this. I've never really liked Christmas, it makes me nervous (I'd like to give nice presents but I never find anything nice and end up giving people shitty gifts and feel ashamed, I hate Christmas carols, I can't stand all the lights and stupid decorations, etc). But now... I think I just wanna drink glogg and knit socks and listen to Fairytale of New York, read that Christmas story in Sin City and that Christmas story in Transmetropolitan. (Especially listen to Fairytale of New York and read Transmet. There's no combination like listening to the Pogues while readin Warren Ellis' comics.) I can even think about Santa Claus and not go all "IT SHOULD BE NUUTTIPUKKI AND HE SHOULD KICK AND BITE AND BE MEAN AND DRUNK, THAT'S WHAT HE WAS LIKE BEFORE THEY MADE HIM INTO THIS DISNEY-LIKE USELESS LAME 'SANTA'!"
This is kind of what I feel like when it's Halloween, but kinda different since it's Christmas. Really weird. Maybe it'll go away.

The Pogues - Fairytale of New York

Haha. I love the video.

There's a background jam on Entervoid. This here is Blake's room. Well the other half of it anyway.

Neljäs keskiviikko

I drew something cute and it isn't zombies!

maanantai 16. marraskuuta 2009

Kolmas maanantai

This is probably going to be the cutest picture I've ever drawn (except for sealife, but you can't really beat prehistoric sharks). It's not even close to finished as you can see, but it's orange, there's an old train car, and Cait has a yellow dress. Those are my two oldest characters I still haven't discarded, and they're probably my favourite ones, and I still can't remember the last time i drew them together.

Kolmas sunnuntai

VL gin is an imaginary brand I made up 'cos I needed to have a bottle in a comic panel, and like with SodaPoP, things got out of hand. (Well not quite as much. I don't have that girl's whole life figured out, but you'll see, I've thought about this stuff way too much. I came up with a drink recipe for a drink called "Sweetheart".) So now I have the whole product planned. VL gin is cheap and strong, and it's marketed with elegance and class, although the ads still make it very clear that "with this stuff, you won't remember even the most unforgettable party of the year".
Kind of a very conflicting fucked up brand. I bet it'd sell.

Here's the (rather old) SodaPoP ad I ended up making when i needed a label to a random soda can in a comic panel. SodaPoP is medusa lemonade. And it comes in lovely flavours like strawberry-ginger, classic lime, blueberry-pepper, orange-cinnamon and banana-chili.

Toinen keskiviikko, myöhemmin

Couldn't stand the idea that the first thing one'd see opening this blog was a Christmas card sketch. So here it is - a monster I found in my tea cup last week. I forgot to throw away the yerba leaves, and two days later THAT thing had migrated in MY tea cup. It didn't say anything, but smiled, and I knew it knew that I knew that it knew that I was scared of it, and it just smiiiiiled.
I threw it away and washed my tea cup. I won. Ha.

(Really, my tea cups don't normally have weird mould-like alien life in them.)

Toinen keskiviikko

And I'm not even early.

Toinen tiistai

It seems like I didn't have zombie virus after all. (I was sure I had it. First a brain-bowling fever, lungs slowly shutting down, and then then body temperature dropping - CLASSIC zombie virus. But no. I'm fine now. No zombie apocalypse this week either.)

Things I do when I don't draw:

This was the first one. It's a notebook I made. The pages are made "old" using coffee. That piece of glass isn't that bright really.

About 7cm x 5cm. That piece of glass isn't that pale really.

You can see trough the piece of glass.

About 5cm tall.

About 9cm x 6,5cm.

About 12cm x 17cm. For my dad, hence the scale pattern and hooks.

I have more. Beware.

Toinen lauantai

Colouring experiment I started ages ago, but only finished now. Not sure if I like it or not, but I wanted to get it over and done.
There are three Edward Hopper paintings there, you see? And coffee in a white ceramic cup, and a checkered tablecloth, and moon, and life should be more like that. You can't find places like that anymore. Not that I know if those ever really existed (except in Jarmusch's movies and Kerouac's "On the Road"). I'd like to think they did.

I have fever, not sure what I'm talking about. Go watch Jarmusch's "Coffee and Cigarettes". It has the most awkward café scene ever, with Iggy and Tom.

Toinen perjantai

My mother asked me whether this is the same person I was drawing some days ago. She ment the one in my last post.
Somehow she always thinks my men are supposed to be women and the other way around. Need to draw more beards and bigger breasts, I guess. Might be fun.

...So the next one is going to be Ronnie Drew posing with Dolly Parton.

Lauantai

Maailman paras tekosyy piirtää kaikkea yli-sympaattista. Ihan "lievästi" Tom Waitsin konserttielokuvan "Big Time" inspiroima, koska Waits on ehkä siistein ikinä.

A great excuse for drawing cute stuff such as zombies, ghosts and skeletons. This one is pretty heavily influenced by Tom Wait's "Big Time" concert/movie. Because Tom Waits in Big Time is possibly the coolest thing ever.

Almost forgot:
Part one of Big Time on youtube.

Torstai

Ken: Well, it's, you know, the final day on Earth, when mankind will be judged for the crimes they've committed and that.
Ray: Oh. And see who gets into heaven and who gets into hell and all that.
Ken: Yeah. And what's the other place?
Ray: Purgatory.
Ken: Purgatory... what's that?
Ray: Purgatory's kind of like the in-betweeny one. You weren't really shit, but you weren't all that great either. Like Tottenham.
Ray: Do you believe in all that stuff, Ken?
Ken: About Tottenham?
from the movie "In Bruges"

A sketch for something I may or may not do properly someday. A rather anemic day of judgement.
I've sort of decided to post something every day. Maybe not tomorrow, but, y'know...

tiistai 27. lokakuuta 2009

We had a flying toaster at school today. Here's Toastissimo The Great. Got bored with the picture after a while and it didn't turn out very dynamic.

Ikävä kyllä, Mahtava Toastissimo väsyi lentämiseen aika pian.
Unfortunately, Toastissimo The Great got bored with flying pretty soon.Kiasma voisi haluta rahoittaa Toastissimon eläkepäivät.
I bet the museum of modern art is interested in taking care of Toastissim now it's retired.

I blog, therefore I am.

Hyvät kanssaihmiset, saanen esitellä blogini. Koska minulla ei ole mitään sanottavaa, postaan lähinnä piirustuksia. Ja linkkejä, joita pidän joko hauskoina tai hyödyllisinä.

So I started a blog. I have nothing to say, so I'll be posting art. And random links I've found useful or fun. Don't know whether I should write in Finnish or English, so (at least) for now I'll use both. Please bear with my bad English.

Ottiatuota/Yours truly,
Vilma
