Happy birthday, us...

I've had this blog for over a year now. That's a lot longer than I thought it'd survive. I was going to post some comics to celebrate this, but then things happened and time passed and I have nothing to show (I have some twenty pages of nonsense SOMEWHERE, but haven't scanned it yet and possibly never will) so instead, look at this background image I made for my animation (which you are not going to see either, sorry).

Doing it wrong, Jim Davies

Just posting pictures I made during summer, calling it an update.

I read some nice books during summer (I was supposed to read something sophisticated but ended up with The Godfather, Naked Lunch [which I still haven't finished, after several years of reading], Post Office, Crooked Little Vein, The Rum Diary and Orpheus Emerged, but at least I had fun reading) one of which was "The Cat Inside" by William S. Burroughs. If you have to tell us about cats, please do it his way. Not the way Jim Davies did it. (Just an example, not that I had anything against Garfield, I just think it's the worst comic ever, but hey, I'm sure you find your cat funny, Jim.)
So, here's a cat.

I'd like to add that even though I find Garfield incredibly annoying (and enjoy Martin McDonagh's plays) I like cats.

HA!

Ha, I forgot to post this. Then I uploaded it, didn't have time to write anything and didn't post it. Just a doodle. Not much to say about it.

I still don't have anything to write about, so, hmmm, go and read a book, or something.

Oh hey, watch the Helvetica documentary, now that was good.

Hello.

"Sometimes at dusk, when you were trying to relax and not think of the general stagnation, the Garbage God would gather a handful of those choked-off morning hopes and dangle them somewhere just out of reach; they would hang in the breeze and make a sound like delicate glass bells, reminding you of something you never quite got hold of, and never would."
-The Rum Diary
Trying new things. Like rooftops, weird coloured skies, lights, skinny young men in black suits and short girls in dresses.
No, really, I quite like this.

Meren rannalla haitari soi, hai ei siitä pitänyt - haita risoi.

I thought I was smart using the pattern from my teacup as a tattoo design, until I went through my blog and realised I've already done that at least once before. Oh well.

Never compromise - a shark who said "fuck you" to evolution

No drawings today, but look at this clip I just found on YoutTube! A new video of a prehistoric shark! Isn't that just the cutest animal you've ever seen? After penguins, of course. Awww can you see how its teeth are almost nonexistent and how it's never going to get a proper bite? Keep your kittens and puppies, next Christmas I want one of these. A sixgill shark like in this video or a frilled shark.
Also!

"A sixgill shark—a species often referred to as prehistoric because of its resemblance to sharks living hundreds of millions of years ago—is seen biting on bait at a camera trap deep off Australia. It's part of a project to learn more about deep-sea creatures and possible correlations with human sight and brain development."

Someone gets to study sharks AND human brain? That must be the best job ever. I bet the lucky bastard gets to ride dinosaurs at work too.

In fact, this is almost a relevant and art related post. Prehistoric sharks are one of the things that got me into drawing. Someone linked this video (from 2007, never mind the idiotic female voice calling tha shark ugly, can't you see it's obviously trying to smile and be as presentable as an old sick shark can be when you go bothering it with a camera) on the Entervoid forums and started a long picture thread of weird sea animals, so while following the conversation I also got into the whole Entervoid-thing and thought I might take drawing seriously and maybe one day be even 10% as awesome as James Stokoe (I found Entervoid through his work - his Deviantart account is here but unfortunately the last updates are fom 2008), whose new comic book, "Orc Stain" is out soon. Just a little commercial break here.

Helle vaarantaa vesivärimaalaukset

Practising with watercolours. Thankyous to Pilvi for helping me find masking liquid and to Tir-ri and her awesome watercolour walk-through which I've wanted to try for ages.

Keskiviikko

I made this about a month ago but forgot to post it. So, here it is, then. Inspired by the Jekyll & Hyde movie they made in the 30s. The stroy is simple yet haunting and has been my favourite horror story since I was 14.

Nyt lienee heinäkuu, eikö?

This blog has been rather dead lately due to an illustration thing I'm working on, a school project and social life (not lying, shut up).
Meanwhile, be entertained by other dead things:
George Carlin
Now he's gonna be one bad ass zombie once the day comes...

More digital colouring stuff.

Vuoden kahdeskymmenes perjantai

First I spent a long time colouring this picture with markers, pencils, ballpoint pens and felt tip pens, and once it was ready I grayscaled it and slapped some "overlay" and "colour" layers on it, and it just turned out so much better.
Good thing I'm such a patient person, otherwise I might feel a bit annoyed right now. The first one is the original, the other one is the photoshopped version.

Maybe they just got sick of hydrocrystalophones.

"The Pillowman" is probably one of the weirdest, saddest, most disturbing things I've ever read while also being one of the most beautiful and brilliant (and no, I don't think everything McDonagh writes is brilliant, some of of his plays were only 'very good') stories I've known. It's cruel and horrible but oddly comforting at the same time.

I just realised I forgot to go and see "The Adventures Of Prince Achmed" today. I hope they are going to show it again some day. Because it looks so good.

Penguins have been my favourite animal since I was 5 years old. I think Madagascar (and sequels) really captured the true nature of penguins. (Unlike Happy Feet or March of the Penguins.) Also, Adelie Penguins are the best. Just look at them walking!

Vuoden kolmastoista keskiviikko

I've got nothing to say, I made a picture with a lunatic panda and a weird bird of paradise, isn't that just lovely.

Started reading McDonagh's "The Cripple of Inishmaan" yesterday. It's very... McDonagh-like. And good. I doubt it'll beat Lieutenant or Brugge though. McDonagh's plays and movies remind me of The Pogues' first three albums. Which is why I'm linking you "Connemara, let's go".

And because I don't want to be seen as a rebelling teenager, here's some Dubliners too.

My phone. Keypad was impossible to paint, and the rims may have to be re-done, but it's still better than it used to be. Well I like it.
Would it be better if it looked more like copper? Hmm.

Kymmenes perjantai?

Martin McDonagh's play "The Lieutenant of Inishmore" is awesome and I'd sell my soul to be able to see it onstage. I also consider this project rather interesting.

Drawing not related.

Experimenting with texture brushes and digital colouring. Lineart seems a bit too heavy in comparison to the colours, but damn those colours turned out nice.

Vuoden yhdeksäs lauantai

I always loved the visual style of The Good The Bad And The Queen. I even bought their album because of the cover. (And because at the time I thought Paul Simonon was the coolest combination of a painter and a bass player ever. C'mon, he painted stuff like "Egg, bacon, frying pan".) In fact it's one of the two CDs I've bought during the last two years. My CD collection is ridiculously small since I always get everything from library or listen to music from Spotify.

Oxygen. It's good for you. Unless you're one of those anaerobic little things.
Then again, if you are you're probably a bacterium of some sort and I probably don't like you anyway. Go breathe some oxygen.

It's radioactive. It also reminds me of "Repo Man".

Miller: A lot o' people don't realize what's really going on. They view life as a bunch o' unconnected incidents 'n things. They don't realize that there's this, like, lattice o' coincidence that lays on top o' everything. Give you an example; show you what I mean: suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconciousness.
Otto: You eat a lot of acid, Miller, back in the hippie days?

One fine movie. I've occasionally thought about getting a job as a repo man just to get to quote this movie ad nauseum. Untill I figured out that I can do it even if I'm not a repo man. Ha-ha!

Back to school tomorrow.

Dear mister action movie person,

When you run out of ammunition, please do not throw your gun away. It can be re-filled and recycled. Or you can use it to beat your opponents forehead in two if that's more to your liking.

Ottiatuota,
Omadhaun

I decided to try something new with colours. Like giving someone brown hair. Not red, black, gray or white. Brown.
I don't like it.
